The junior varsity Midland Dow girl’s basketball team was able to shake off a slow start and employ a suffocating defense to shut down the host Warriors and pick up a 52-29 win Friday at Bay City Western.

“We came out very flat in the first quarter,” said Dow coach Kyle Theisen. “We were slow on defense and did not get into our traps, but we woke up in the second quarter and played good team ball the rest of the game.”

The Chargers picked up the intensity in the second half, which put Western in the penalty. Dow went cold from the line shooting only 15-for-33, but it was enough to turn the tide and put the Warriors away.

Stephanie Russell and Jessica Gable led the Chargers with 11 points apiece.

“This team is high energy once they woke up,” Theisen said. “We will have a tough game against Grand Blanc on Monday. They are a good team and will be a good test for us early in the season.”

Dow travels to take on the Bobcats Monday, December 8. Game time is 6 p.m.
