Share this storyThe Lady Chargers began Tuesday’s game at Mount Pleasant with an 11-0 run and never looked back en route to a decisive 52-18 win.
The Chargers set an aggressive tone early on, moving the ball quickly and looking for fast break opportunities while simultaneously shutting down the Oilers offense the entire length of the court.
“We came out firing and never looked back,” said Dow coach Kyle Theisen. “Our press gave them some trouble early on and we were able to capitalize on turnovers. We played great team defense. They had to earn every point they got.”
Sophomore forward Taylor Thurston scored 11 points in the first half for Dow, leading the charge that left the Oilers down 27-7 at the break. Sophomore Kailey White scored five points for Mt. Pleasant.
The second half was more of the same, as Dow showed no signs of slowing with a 20-point lead. Mt. Pleasant ball handlers were often double teamed and the Oilers had trouble advancing past half court on several possessions.
Thurston contributed another six points in the second half to bring her total to 17 points on the game. Emily Fogg finished with 9 points for the Chargers, while Shelby Thompson added seven steals.
Cherish Allen scored four for the Oilers.
“I was pleased to play well early on,” Theisen continued. “The first game is always tough and Mount Pleasant always gives us a hard time. It was nice to see our team come out ready to play on the road.”
Dow returns to the hard court Friday, December 5 when it travels to Bay City Western to take on the Warriors. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
