The Midland High freshman football team used the ground game to take an early lead and controlled the tempo for most of the game, but not when it mattered most.

Trailing by two points with less than a minute left, Mount Pleasant took to the air in dramatic fashion and Ryan Elliott connected on a 20-yard touchdown to Zac Kramer to take the lead with :42 remaining to post a 19-14 win over the Chemics at Midland Community Stadium.

Midland jumped out to an early lead scoring on its first possession of both halves, and used a smothering defense to keep the Oilers in check for much of the game.

In their opening possession of each half, the Chemics methodically moved the chains and marched down the field converting two drives into two touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough.

The Oilers matched each touchdown with two long touchdown strikes through the air from Elliott to Colton Odykirk, and scored the final touchdown in the closing seconds to steal the win.

Midland (0-1) returns to action Wednesday, September 3 when it plays host to Bay City Central. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
