Softball: Chargers shut down Raiders for sweep
April 28, 2008 at 9:39 amDespite the cold weather, Sam Wood warmed up to account for 10 total RBIs Friday helping the Midland Dow junior varsity softball team take the opener 8-3 before squeaking out the nightcap 9-8 to sweep visiting Flushing at H.H. Dow High.
“Sam Wood had a great day,” said Dow coach Kim Dankert. “She had been struggling a little bit at the plate, but she definitely broke out today. I couldn’t be happier for her.”
Wood went 3-for-4 in the opener with a double, triple, and three RBIs to lead the Chargers offensively, while Taylor Thurston went 2-for-3.
While their offensive stole the show, Dankert was especially pleased with the defense.
“Our defense is improving daily and it’s showing,” she said. “Our pitchers are very focused on the mound and are doing a great job of running the show. Not only are they pitching well, they are also fielding their positions and doing a great job leading the team.”
Staci Thornton pitched a complete game for Dow, striking out eight without allowing an earned run on two hits.
Wood started the second game and struck out 10, allowing three earned runs on six hits to record the win. She stayed on fire at the plate, too, going 3-for-3 with a double, triple, and a home run to record seven RBIs in the nightcap.
Stephanie Russell went 2-for-3 in the second game, with three stolen bases that led to three runs.
The Chargers’ record improves to 11-2-1 on the season and 5-1 in league play. They return to action Thursday when they travel to Heritage to take on the Hawks. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
