Softball: Junior Chargers stampede Trojans
April 21, 2008 at 12:07 pmThe pitchers for the Midland Dow junior varsity softball team seemed untouchable Thursday and its hitters seemed like they couldn’t miss as the Chargers went to Saginaw High and swept the Trojans 20-1 and 17-2.
“We had a couple of rookie pitchers in the games tonight and they both did very well,” said Dow coach Kim Dankert. “The girls were very supportive of them on the mound and it showed in the game.”
Alisha Lukins took the hill in the opener and faced 13 batters, allowing only one hit and striking out six.
Offensively the Chargers were led by Kikki Lone, Kaitlyn Voet, and Kaitlyn Gamble who all went 2-for-3. Lukins went 2-for-4 from the plate with a home run.
Ellie Wynn started the nightcap and struck out 11 of the 16 batters she faced to shut out Saginaw and record the no-hitter.
Billie Eigsti led the Chargers offensively going 3-for-4 with a double and a home run.
“(She) had a great game at the plate,” Dankert said. “Billie hasn’t been seeing a lot of playing time but she did a great job tonight.”
Also contributing for Dow was Stephanie Russell and Taylor Thurston who went 2-for-3.
“I’m very happy with how well the girls are hitting the ball,” Dankert said. “We had three home runs tonight and three triples.”
The Chargers improved to 6-1-1 overall and 4-0 in league play. They return to action Monday when they travel to Flint Southwestern to take on the Knights. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
